For more than a decade, Tobin "Big Murph" Murphy has dedicated his life to serving youth, strengthening families, and creating opportunities for underserved communities. His passion for mentorship and community empowerment has driven him to become a trusted leader and advocate throughout Charlotte.
Over the past 10 years, Tobin has volunteered countless hours mentoring young people and helping individuals experiencing homelessness access resources that promote stability and self-sufficiency. His commitment to service led him to serve as Operational Manager for Block Love Charlotte, where he supported community engagement initiatives, Stop the Violence campaigns, and resource events designed to create safer and stronger neighborhoods.
Believing that mentorship extends beyond words, Tobin has introduced young people to meaningful life experiences and practical skills through fishing outings, lessons on professionalism, and hands-on instruction in basic automotive maintenance. His goal has always been to help young people develop confidence, responsibility, and self-reliance.
As an active community leader, Tobin contributed to initiatives that brought together more than 10,000 residents through Charlotte Day, promoting unity, peace, and collaboration among neighborhoods.
Driven by his vision for lasting change, Tobin founded the annual Derita Day celebration in the community where he was raised. For eight years, this beloved event has united residents, strengthened community pride, and provided valuable resources and opportunities for families.
Today, as the Founder and Executive Director of Tanglewood Derita Community Advancement, Tobin continues to empower youth and families through programs, resources, and support systems that encourage personal growth, self-sufficiency, and community advancement.
His mission is simple yet powerful:
